Hi again! Today's post deals with the Mythacon Fantasy doubles tournament. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my camera out for this one so I'll have to keep it brief.
Once again I was subbing in for The Friend Who Couldn't Make It. This meant that I got to pilot a Warriors of Chaos list consisting of:
1 Lv4 tzeench wizard with items that help him cast
1 Lv1 nurgle wizard with puppet
15 chaos warriors with mark of nurgle, halberds and shields.
5 knights of khorne
5 knights of khorne.
My partner had a Beasts of Chaos list that also followed the same basic battle plan of charge in and kill everything:
1 Minotaur Lord with some magic weapon
1 Minotaar battle standard bearer
4 minotaurs with full command
4 chariots
For those of you scrambling for your calculators, these lists should be 1250 points each.
First Game:
We played against a double wood elf team which apparently regularly wins best painted at these sorts of events. They were good opponents, but unfortunately I forgot a couple of very important rules throughout the game. Mistake 1 was forgetting that chaos knights have a 1+ save and instead taking a 2+. This may not seem like a big difference, but when 20 wood elves shoot armour piercing bows at your knights you actually lose a couple! Second mistake was that when I actually charged the things I ended up forgetting my horse attacks and losing the combat by 1. My partner faired slightly better though, so we were only ended up getting a minor loss.
Second Game:
After lunch we came across a double empire team that only had two or three warmachines. Excited, we just rushed up as fast as we could on our first turn. This ended up being a very poor choice. My partner had assumed that war alters and steam tanks were not really that fast, so his minotaur block got charged by one of each in our opponents first turn. I faired slightly better, only having one unit of knights be charged by a horde of 40ish flagellants. They then had Speed of Light cast on them and tore my knights apart, overrunning into the second unit and killing them in my turn. The minotaurs were also dead by the end of our second turn. I believe it is sufficient to say that we were massacred in this game. Once again, aside from what was going on on the table, the game was actually pretty good. Our opponents were gracious in victory and gave us some helpful advice after the game was over.
Third Game:
The final game of the day saw us facing the ringer/tournament organizer/ungor apologist Paul Ting. He was using two beastmen armies against us, meaning we fought all same-codex teams all day. Once again we learned a lot of interesting things this game. Minotaurs have light armour, ungor is not pronounced 'oon'gore, and ungore bowmen are the most dangerous unit on the table. My partner's minotaur block got flank charged by an opposing minotaur block, but managed to hold it off for quite some time until only the two lord choices were left fighting eachother. Some clever maneuvering saw my chaos knights units getting tripped up and unable to charge Paul's bestigores in time to save my warriors block from them. We ended up getting another major loss, but this game was really quite enjoyable. Paul was a great opponent.
Glittering Prizes!
That's right, we got an award in this one too. For getting dead last in the tournament, My partner and I were awarded with a box of 10 night goblins and some paints. Did you know that Games-Workshop bottles a paint called undercoat black? All of our opponents placed within the top five for generalship, making the sting of defeat slightly less painful. Paul would have won the whole thing if he wasn't the organizer!
Lessons to Live with:
So, on this day I learned that I actually need to play fantasy on a semi-regular basis if I plan to play it in a tournament setting. Additionally, I have made my tournament 'stats' a lot more interesting. Of the four tournaments I have attended, I have won prizes at two (both Mythacon ones) and got dead last in two (Mythacon Fantasy and Grande Prairie 40k Hardboys 2009). I also met some cool people and saw some nice armies, plus I didn't have to pay to get in!
As for the future, my roommates and I have just recently started a fantasy map based campaign that will probably be running until December. I will be using my Dark Elves, and the other players have Lizardmen and Ogres. It should be an exciting series of games!
