Tournament Overt Paranoia 2014: The Army List

Time for the army list.  This tournament has the dubious honour of being my first event with the new Imperial Guard book and my last event of 6th edition 40K.  The limits on army list construction can be found in the link below, but the only one that really matters for me is that this is an 1850 point tournament.

Tournament Octagonal Pentagon 2014: IT BEGINS

Another year, another flurry of blog posts!  This year's Tournament OP is a month away and it's time to get my 40k act together again.  I've been playing practice games to see if my new Catachan force can take on the competition and I'm thinking they are up for the challenge.  But first, I've got to paint some stuff!

Pictures after the break.

TEAM OP 2013 Report

The funny thing about setting deadlines on your own blog is that there isn't really much of an incentive to follow them.  That being said, I am sorry to all my loyal viewers who were forced to wait longer than I said they would.
With that out of the way, let's take a look at my Team OP experience!
Here's a link to my army list.

Something Wicked This Way Comes!

Well, it's that time of year again.  With the second annual Team OP tournament only three days away it is time to resurrect this blog and track some progress.  I'm using a similar list to the one I used last year, except some changes in the allowed army composition have led me to spice things up a bit.

The main difference is that the different spots on the Force Organization Chart have a maximum amount of spendable points, so I was forced to cut down on my heavy support.  Also, there is a mandatory 500 point allied attachment, which will be my Fallen Angel led Chaos Marines.  Without further adieu, here is the list.

Experiencing Allies

So yesterday night I played my second game of sixth edition.  I was interested in trying out the rules for allies, so I threw together an army list based around the idea of an Imperial Guard artillery force being supported by Space Marines raining down in drop pods.  My opponent also wanted to try out the allies, so he went with the slightly less thematically appropriate combination of Tau and Marines.  We decided that they were from the Exorcists chapter, for maximum oddness.

Team OP Tournament Report: The Hunt for the Elusive W

Last weekend I attended the Team OP (octopus party) Tournament, a 1600 point 40k affair with the craziest scenarios I have ever seen.  It was run by a new group on the tournament scene, but I would say that they really did a good job.  The tables and terrain were all quite nice, and they also provided lunch on both days. My army list can be found here.  The final twist was that each player was given eight secret mission cards, which were chosen after deployment and gave +5 to the battle score.  Winning a game fully gave 13 points, for a maximum of 18 per game.

Team OP prep: 33 down, 31 to go

Time for another painting update.  Today I managed to finally get the first combined infantry squad done.
Well ok, not entirely.  For some reason I still haven't touched their autocannons, but those will have to wait until tomorrow.  Here is some photographic proof.
Success!

Team OP painting prep: Missiles away!

Hey there.  I just finished doing a bunch of work on my first 20 man squad and I also based the missile launcher teams.  These were a major pain as I had simply glued both small based models onto one larger base when the codex was updated.  This would not look good with the basing material I was using, so they had to come off.  It was a brutal struggle, but in the end I managed to separate the men from their bases and the small bases from the larger ones.
First up we have the group shot.  Also seen in this picture are a commissar and a platoon leader who were based using extra glue I had.

On Painting the Imperial Guard: Memory Lane

In lieu of fresh pictures, today's post will describe the techniques I have developed as I learned to paint my army.  As you probably have noticed, I am not a 'pro painter'.  That being said, I have come a long way since my first model.

It all started back in 2002.  After talking to my good friend Chris about this Warhammer game we decided that the Imperial Guard was the faction for me.  My first model was the infamous Sly Marbo.  Buying him taught me the most fundamental skills of Warhammer modelling: buying your model and gluing it together.  At this point in my hobbying career I had no time for silly things like undercoating or basing.  My brother and I also learned quite quickly that 'black ink' was not like the other GW paints we had bought as it took a lot to get a nice even coat.  Instead of investigating this further we simply ignored the subtleties of painting and stick to the basics.
A Catachan from the first batch.  Pretty gross by today's standards, but it did the job.

Super Necron Battle Update

What's that you say?
Blog update on Sunday?
Apparently not...  Instead you get a double header today!

First of all, I got a test game in with my 1600 point Straken list against some proxied Necrons.  I didn't take any pictures as I thought it would just be confusing, but here is the enemy list:

Necron Overlord :gauntlet of fire, resurrection orb, phaeron
Tomb Stalker
15 warriors with night scythe
10 warriors with ghost arc
10 warriors with ghost arc
5 scarabs
5 scarabs
5 tomb blades
Annihilation barge
Annihilation barge

-->Lord went in the big unit, and their airplane just did shooting stuff.

Team OP: first unit based!

So today I finished basing my veteran unit.  I did these guys first because they don't really need much in the way of painting, so I figured I would just base them and get that out of the way.

Team OP preperation, update #2

So I've been slowed down a little by things like job finding, car fixing, and procrastination, but I have managed to finish the assembly on my tank and get my plasma guns into the hands of Straken's command squad.  I also have pictures to prove it!

Team OP: First steps

So, a day has passed and I've started getting my models organized.  In this first picture we can see my Leman Russ tank being built, along with some random Catachans and some basing supplies.  This tank still needs a name, so suggestions would be appreciated.
This next picture shows how I plan to base these dudes.  You'll notice that it is quite jungle-ish, which is exactly what I want!

Team OP Tournament, planning stages

Well it seems like every time I want to get some work done on Dark Eldar I find another reason to get more guardsmen. June 2-3 is the Team OP tournament, a 1600 point 40k affair. My army list is due on the 18th, so I've got some time to playtest it before it becomes final. Here is the second draft:

Catachan 516th Artillery Company

Time for the army list!  Having a subtle lack of anti tank weapons is a bit of an unfortunate theme with my Imperial Guardsmen, but I'm thinking this should be fun.  Also, I plan to get my Colossus Cannon and my Manticore spray painted tonight so I can start painting them tomorrow or Friday.
