Neo-Retro-Chaos

So today I got to play a very odd game of warhammer 40k.  To set the stage, the scenario was two objectives and the deployment type was Dawn of War.  These were randomly rolled.  My list is a fairly standard dark eldar list, as follows:

Archon with djin blades, clonefield, phantom grenade launcher, soul trap, haywire    140

Fast Attack
6 Reaver Jetbikes with two heat lances                                                                         156

Heavy Support
Razorwing Fighter with flickerfield, monoscythe, Dlances                                          155
Ravager with 3 dark lances, flickerfield                                                                        115
Ravager with 3 dark lances, flickerfield                                                                        115                           385

The interesting part comes in the form of my opponent's list.  We decided that it would be cool for Chris to use the old 4th edition Chaos Space Marine Codex in this battle.  Here is his list, without the points because I didn't ask.

Deamon Prince with mark of Khorne, collar of Khorne, Glaive(8 attacks + d3 on charge), wings, 7 str and toughness, 2+/4+ save, moves an extra d6 per turn and has to move towards the nearest enemy  ~260 points

2 obliterators

10 chaos marines with bp/ccw and 2 melta guns
->Rhino
10 chaos marines with bp/ccw and 2 melta guns
->Rhino
10 chaos marines with bp/ccw and 2 melta guns
->Rhino

8 raptors with 3 melta guns and infiltrate

Predator with twin linked autocannon, 2 lascannons
Predator with twin linked autocannon, 2 lascannons

One objective was in a crater near the center on his side, and the other was in a crater in my back right corner
I gave him fist turn, so he set up his deamon prince on the centre of the board.  I them put up my warriors in their raider nice and far away from his deamon lord.

Highlights of the game:
1: everything rolls on, I shoot everything I have at the deamon prince and do only one wound...  Also, one of the small squads of wytches sits down on my objective.
2: The Raptors fail to arrive.  Deamon prince charges and wipes out my warriors, the larger wytch raider is stunned as is the warrior's raider.  Also, my airplane dies.  Then I run up my venom and charge my Archon into the obliterators and kill one.  I also ran up one of the small squads of wytches and manage to stun and weapon destroy one of Chris's predators.
In a funny turn of events, my jetbikes moved up to attack on of the rhinos and missed.  Then one of my ravagers blew it up, killing two of the bikers and one of the marines in the explosion.  The bikers fled.
3:The Raptors fail to arrive.  The Deamon prince moves up and charges the raider that contains 10 wytches.  It blows up and kills all but three of them.  I keep the agoniser, a hydra gauntlet, and a normal wytch.  His warriors also manage to mop up the five man unit and their raider.  The squad of warriors near my jetbikes charges them and they don't regroup so they die.
I move my venom over to the unit of marines that I forced to disembark last turn.  Then my ravagers shoot them and my incubi charge them so they die.  Archon is still fighing that darn obliterator, as he just can't get the sixes to wound.
4:The Raptors fail to arrive.  The deamon prince charges one of my ravagers, taking off a lance and immobilizing it.  Chris moves an empty rhino near my incubi to keep them from moving around a building effectively.  I start running my incubi towards the central objective, hoping their pain token will keep them alive.  Also, my still mobile ravager edges away from the deamon prince.  My witches charge it, and surprisingly they survive.  Unfortunately, he passes enough invulnerable saves from my agoniser so the deamon prince is still going.
5:  The raptors arrive!  They outflank on my left side, so they won't be able to contest my objective.  Chris realizes this and runs a rhino towards it, but it will need another turn to get there.  His shooting kills my incubi and all the other vehicles in that area, and the deamon prince finishes  off the wytches and that ravager.  In my turn my last surviving raider flies up to Chris's objective to contest it and the game ends.

Thoughts:
   My archon sure is good at tying up units that rely on a few powerful attacks.  He also managed not to attack himself once and never rolled worse than a two for his clone field.
   Chris's daemon prince seems like a great example of the crazy stuff that was possible with the old chaos book.  If I had rolled a little better with my initial lance volley I might have been able to kill it, but after that I couldn't justify focusing all my fire on it so it just tore through my lines.
   Infiltrating triple melta gun jump pack guys with hit and run is a scary thought.  I sure am glad that they decided not to show up for this battle.  Chris was a bit disappointed that we rolled dawn of war as he was looking forward to hopping them up and melting my most important vehicle turn one.
   I'm not sure I really deserved this win.  If Chris had pushed a bit harder towards my objective he probably could have got there and won the game.  Instead, random game length really screwed him over.  Just for fun, we ended up playing out the full seven turns and he tabled me.
   Dark Eldar are awesome.  I love zooming my little transports around and firing weapons that don't really care about my opponents stats.  Having grenades that only fail to do something on a 1 are especially nice.

  1. Still no end to the Vassal tournament, but I just have to get in a couple more turns in for my game with John to be complete. Hopefully this week will be the end of it.
